The first documented KyuYoung interaction happened sometime late 2007 during Chunji's 100 days celebration. Sooyoung and Sungmin, both DJs of the said program, received a surprise call from Kyuhyun. Kyu congratulated the two for the occasion; and the entire phone call, which ran for approximately eight minutes, was full of bickering and teasing from both ends of the line. No exclusive interaction between the two except from usual group meet-ups of SNSD and SJ was noted afterward.

Fast forward two years later, Super Show 2 in Seoul became the talk of the town when the boys dressed up as members of Girls' Generation and performed to their very own rendition of Gee. Performing members were specifically chosen by the Kim Heechul. Quite a shock to many was the explosive popularity of Kyu dressing up as Sooyoung with the name KYUYOUNG stenciled on his shirt. It is therefore assumed that the origin of the name KyuYoung sprouted during the Gee impersonation.

The name has then long been used by Kyuhyun-Sooyoung supporters to refer to this pairing.



KyuYoung exists not only because they have lots of similarities, look good together, and have this impeccable chemistry between them. Kyuyoung existed even before these things were caught by fans. In as much as such things give sudden boosts of zeal, it is their real interactions (or under suspicious circumstances, the lack thereof) that appeal most to the supporters.

For one, Sooyoung is close with almost all members of Super Junior, having documented interactions with all of them (except perhaps Kibum because of his absence during Super Junior's 3rd and 4th album). However, there has been no interaction specifically showing signs of close friendship between her and Kyuhyun. One might say that Kyu is shy; but this idea is debunked by the fact that Kyu had interactions with the other girls. He had obvious interactions with Yoona, Jessica, Seohyun, and Sunny. Those mentioned were girls he has worked with or spent some time with (Yoona during U and Marry U; Jessica in Super Girl; Seohyun in S.E.O.U.L; and Sunny in Chunji). It is quite notable how he has, basically, zero-interactions with Sooyoung: arguably, the most outgoing member of So Nyuh Shi Dae.

This may come off as normal but it becomes suspicious when one will connect it with the history of the two. As Chunji, for example. Their interaction over the telephone suggests a rather comfortable relationship between them; to the extent of Sooyoung talking to Kyu and making it sound as if she is crushing on him. Kyu played along and even pushed the game further by saying "I love you" to the girl and making sure that she has heard it. Apart from this, there was the Gee performance which demanded detailed study of the song for the boys' parts which they will learn only from the girls, themselves. Granting that they seem to be cool with one another, it should be expected that they will be closer after these incidences. However, what happened was the opposite. They became more awkward and shy towards each other.

[A possible explanation of the Kyuyoung awkwardness is explained in the SUPER SHOW III: MANILA 2011 fan account (link is listed below). Through the fanaccount of a Knight, Kyuhyun was noted to be teasing the fans holding a large tarp saying "Starcraft King GaemGyu" with his picture photoshopped on a character's body. Kyuhyun's constant teasing of the fans shows that Kyuhyun loves teasing the people who love him. Kyuhyun's ways of teasing is by ignoring them at first (granted that he does take the teasing a bit far because Kyuhyun enjoys being liked) but goes back to the person in the end. A possible parallel may be Kyuhyun teasing Sooyoung because of Sooyoung's love for him. However, because of his teasing, Sooyoung becomes disappointed and has already 'moved on' when Kyu goes forth to present his love. This could be one possible explanation of the Kyuyoung awkwardness. However, there could be an end to the Kyuyoung awkwardness as seen discussed below.]

Furthermore, evidences of awkward moments unearthed by enthusiastic Kyuyoung shippers are presented in this thread. Apart from said awkward moments, KyuYoung's "interactions" were mostly fancam taken ninja-interactions since both rarely show any sign of knowing each other when in front of the official camera. Similarities are also collected in this thread to support the stand that they-are-such-opposites-that-they-are-so-alike theory (link).

All these things: the lack of opportunity to be with each other and the awkwardness, makes Kyuyoung an interesting pairing. And as long as they still act as if they are same poles of the magnet, constantly repelling each other, the mystery of the Kyuyoung still lives.

In Soo Bahk Do-Moo Duk Kwan, a type of Korean Martial art, they use midnight blue as an expert ranking. This is the highest belt color. If other martial arts use black, Soo Bahk Do uses midnight blue.

KyuYoung seemed to develop a kind of pull within the Kyu-pairing fandom right after the SS2 presentation that quite a number of ELFs showed support as manifested to the number of Kyuyoung fics written around that time. Nevertheless, the lack of blatant KyuYoung interaction on or off-cam kept the kyuyoung-ship silent. There are quite a number of pre-existing KyuYoung fans prior to the establishment of the "KyuYoung Kingdom"; but granting that the kyuyoung-ship is basically silent and that there is no specific place for such supporters to gather, fans do not know one another.

In early 2010, a number of Kyuyoung supporters accidentally met in an online community. There and then, the sudden influx of kyuyoung supporters started and the fandom made itself known once again. Thus, the Knights of the KyuYoung Kingdom has been formed. Kyuyoung has always been a silent pairing known most to the earliest supporters of Super Junior-Girls Generation pairing; but now that several KY spots has been established all throughout the internet and that a quasi-cyber kingdom has been established, KyuYoung fandom has finally decided to speak out and break free from its long overdue hiatus.
